I’ve formed a lot of habits over the years — mostly good I hope. Habits that involve using a daily planner, habits that involve exercising, habits for the food I eat. These are things with specific boundaries around space and time.
You could also call these habits constraints.
In design, constraints are desirable. They help us focus. They narrow our field of view so that we look at the things that matter.
But too many constraints can also mean too little creative freedom. They can minimize the agency of the creator.
Same thing goes with habits. Habits are great. They create constraints that allow you to focus on the things that matter in life. But, too many habits and you minimize your ability to think creatively about your own life.
If you want to shake things up and are in need of a change, look at the habits that you’ve formed and ask yourself: which ones can I get rid of?
