At the behest of a team of oncologists at University of Chicago, I directed my student industrial design consulting team in the fabrication and re-design (in progress) of a sub-$200 microscope. In addition to conducting the design research and development phases of the project, my role has included managing a small team of student designers in the continued modification of an open source microscope model. The device is currently in an early trial phase, and being delivered to field hospitals in Africa. The long-term potential is a $200 microscope that takes images equal to that of a $250,000 device — much of this functionality is enabled by a machine learning algorithm developed by a team at UofC
